Philips Norelco 8240XL Men’s Shaver Review

Overview

The 8240XL Shaver is a mid-range rechargeable shaver from the leading name in rotary head shavers, Philips Norelco.

With this one, you don’t get all the “trimmings” of the newest shavers on the market but, if you just want a reliable model that is a cut above the average shaver (excuse the pun), you should take a closer look at this.

Appearance and Accessories

The 8240XL has a typical look for one of the Philips Norelco shavers, with a curvy and ergonomic handle supporting the rotary heads. It is designed for ease of handling. The body color is lacquered gray and black.

It comes supplied with a soft travel pouch, protective cap and cleaning brush.

Main Features

  • Dual blade cutting system – the first blade lifts the hair and the second cuts it away.
  • The blades are of StaySharp steel.
  • The three Speed XL shaving tracks provide 50% more shaving surface than other standard rotary heads, which means a more thorough shave first time.
  • Ultra thin heads have slots for shaving long hairs and unique micro holes to catch the shortest stubble.
  • It is a more comfortable shave because of the Smart Touch Contour which allows the shaver to follow the contours of the face, with minimal resistance.
  • Reaches even the hard-to-reach areas.
  • Has a precision pop-up trimmer for the sideburns and mustache.
  • Rechargeable battery – charging time is 1 hour.
  • Shaving time is 17 days, according to manufacturer.

Cleaning and Maintenance

This unit is very easy to clean – open the top and rinse with warm water and the shaver is cleaned in seconds. The inside is lined with an anti-bacterial agent that keeps things hygienic at all times.

Price

The Philips Norelco 8240XL Shaver retails for around $160 but you should be able to pick it up under $100 at the right places online.

Warranty

The Philips Norelco 8240XL comes with a two year warranty, as do the other 8200 series models.

User Reviews

The Philips Norelco 8240XL gets largely positive reviews, though it’s not one of Philips Norelco’s best sellers.

It seems to provide a very comfortable, close shave with a battery that lasts long and a motor that has low noise output.

Users who want a fancy cleaning system won’t opt for this shaver as it’s just a run-under-the-tap model but, by all accounts, many users are happy not to have to buy the cleaning cartridges for a cleaning system, which adds costs.

The main negatives are that the top can pop open a little too easily and that there is no warning signal for a low battery.
